ALWAYS START WITH VISION

As Seneca famously said “If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable.” In my global executive coaching practice I often support clients in developing an ‘inspiring’ Vision (their Why’) … one that captures the heart, or imagination, or a new world of possibilities.
This is a critical aspect of leadership (for self & others) because when we and our teams get invariably stuck in the Execution (the ‘How’), and we always get stuck – refocusing everyone on the Vision (the ‘Why’) is what gets everyone unstuck … and re-energised to tack or maneuver the boat and amazingly, face THE SAME WIND from a different direction, and sail powerfully forwards.
And with that, I invite you to reflect on this question … TOWARDS WHICH PORT ARE YOU SAILING? … because direction is more important than speed, and sailing nowhere fast is all too easy in today’s rat-race world. Answering the above question is a great step towards what I call, Visioneering Your Tomorrow.
And changing the rules along the way is okay too – which is what my son and I did when we decided to take a Cigarette Racing Boat out in Dubai, instead of sailing! Our Vision for that weekend – Create a lasting memory of pure adrenaline-fueled family fun! And as you can see, now 10 years later, we did 😎 !
